Originally developed in 399 BC by the ancient Greeks at Syracuse, the ballista was in effect a giant crossbow, used for shooting large arrows or darts that were typically used for defense against besieging infantry. For shelter, they were often situated in a wooden shelter or hoarding and their mounting allowed them to be swiveled to bear against advancing troops. This mechanical working model wooden toy automata kit by Timberkits is fun to assemble and adds animation.
